The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for the position of Senior Clerk for the Inspectional Services Department. Under the direction of Chief of Operations, the Senior Clerk is responsible for providing exceptional customer service face-to-face, over the phone, and electronically by responding to customer inquiries promptly, providing information, directing callers to appropriate personnel, and/or taking and relaying messages.  This individual will also perform data entry, perform bookkeeping responsibilities, and perform general office clerical tasks.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Provide customer service to the general public regarding department policies
  • Assist in the issuance of licenses and permits, public record requests and fees
  • Prepare reports, maintain a filing system, and compose some correspondence
  • Process incoming and/or outgoing mail and packages
  • Check forms, post records, take balances, and make simple bookkeeping reports
  • Perform data entry, typing letters, orders, schedules or forms, filing, faxing, photocopying, scanning, including composing and editing correspondence, reports, memoranda and other material
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent telephone skills as well as telephone etiquette
  • Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, and Excel. 
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and the general public
  • Ability to make work decisions in accordance with City rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures
  •  Ability to maintain clerical records of some complexity and to prepare reports from such records
  •  Ability to operate standard office equipment
  • Ability to prioritize, be organized and multi-task.
  • Excellent customer service skills
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience in a customer service role and/or in a clerical role in an office setting
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills
 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate’s Degree in business administration, public administration, or related discipline
  • Two (2) years of experience in a customer service role in an office setting
  • Two (2) years of experience performing clerical tasks in an office setting
  • One (1) year of experience performing bookkeeping, accounts receivable, or handling cash payments
  • One (1) year of experience preparing reports and/or maintaining records
 
SALARY: $19.01-22.98 hourly, full-time, excellent benefits package.
