Laboratory Technician
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS AND PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER
The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Laboratory Technician at the Water Filtration Plant for the Water Operations Division within the Department of Public Works & Parks. Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing routine and complex physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis of raw, treated and finished water for the City of Worcester. This position will also report up to the Chief Laboratory Technician.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
- Assist in the process of sample log-in, chain of custody and sample preservation
- Participate in the Laboratory QA/QC program
- Perform general instrument maintenance, calibration, and laboratory cleanliness
- Perform microbiological testing of samples utilizing various methods
- Assist in glassware washing, sterilization, and media prep
- Performs other related duties as required
- Knowledge & understanding of and the ability to follow all plant Standard Operating Procedures
- Ability to comply with the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR)
- Knowledge of EPA and Standard Method Procedures
- Ability to operate and care for specialized laboratory equipment such as ICP-MS, Ion Chromatography, GC_MS and other automated and manual testing methods
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and subordinates
- Ability to understand and comply with all safety procedures and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to safely lift and move up to 60 pounds to waist level
- Ability to climb a ladder
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science, or other science-related discipline
- One (1) year of experience as a Laboratory Technician in an environmental or analytical laboratory
- Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office
- Excellent communication skills
- Knowledge of Laboratory LIMS systems
- Prior Microbiology classwork
- Two (2) years of laboratory experience
- Two (2) years of experience performing bacteriological analysis
- Two (2) years of experience with instrument maintenance and calibrations
SALARY RANGE: $27.80 - $33.73 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
