Food Hub Gathering: Honoring Congressman Jim McGovern
Everyone in Worcester and Massachusetts should have the right to access fresh, healthy, and local food, however, this is not the truth. In Worcester alone, over 30,000 people are food insecure, and in Worcester County over 87,000 people. Designed to strengthen the regional food system, the Worcester Regional Food Hub seeks to make the initial sentence the truth, by providing fresh, healthy, and local food to our environmental justice communities, while supporting our local farmers and help launch food entrepreneurs.
WHO WE ARE:
Since 2015, the Food Hub has been the region’s clearinghouse for fresh, healthy, and local food, as we partner with over 55 local farms and producers to distribute our food to over 150 partner organizations. We have a sizable impact on alleviating food insecurity within public schools throughout the Commonwealth as our food provides meals to over 350,000 students. Also, we are a main distributor to non-profits in our Gateway Cities in Worcester County, who run SNAP and HIP-accessible farmer’s markets in our environmental justice communities.
Further, we operate a shared commercial kitchen that incubates local food entrepreneurs, where we provide them with a permitted kitchen, opportunities to obtain licenses, and assistance to start and grow their businesses. Since our founding, we have assisted over 200 food entrepreneurs, a majority being people of color, immigrants, and women. Over the next year, we will continue to grow our shared kitchen capacity in Worcester County by adding five new commercial kitchens at Union Station and three in Fitchburg.
JOIN US:
To honor Congressman Jim McGovern with our Inaugural Food Security Champion Award and attend a culinary celebration featuring our food entrepreneurs.
Proceeds from our fundraiser will benefit the Worcester Regional Food Hub Operations. Together, we can fulfill our mission to increase local food access and consumption and recruit, retain, and incubate local food entrepreneurs, collectively building healthy, sustainable, and just communities in Worcester and Central Massachusetts
